What is a Wordnet?

Wordnet is a large lexical database of (any) language. Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets), each expressing a distinct concept. Synsets are interlinked by means of conceptual-semantic and lexical relations. The resulting network of meaningfully related words and concepts can be navigated with the browser. Most of the Wordnets are also freely and publicly available for downloads. Wordnet's structure makes it a useful tool for computational linguistics and natural language processing.

In one sentence - Wordnet is a machine-readable lexical database organized by meanings.

The Wordnet is a system for bringing together different lexical and semantic relations between the words. It organizes the lexical information in terms of word meanings and can be termed as a lexicon based on psycholinguistic principles.
